School: Occidental College, Small liberal arts located in Northeast Los Angeles

Pay: $15,000

Hours per Week: Approximately 5 practice hours a week (2 practices), with a game every weekend in

season. Times can be negotiated, but normally in the PM.

Season: Spring, with fall and winter preseason

Division: Gold Coast Rugby Union, playing against other NSCRO squads

Job Description: Head Coach of a division III Men’s Rugby team with a history of success. The coach must be able to integrate skills and strategy into both practices and games. The coach is responsible for helping the team fundraise, and will serve as an intermediary between the alumni association and the team.

In brief: Over the last two years our team has experienced great results, a XV’s NSCRO 5th place finish as well as a 7s National championship, all which are due to a multitude of reasons: a great coaching staff, an excellent and generous alumni who span the globe, a rich 50 year history of rugby at Oxy, as well as a few brilliant players, but most importantly we have encountered success because of the attitude of our team and its players. An attitude of pure devotion, a devotion to our school, our studies, our fellow players our team, and our success; on and off the pitch players work hard on such devotion. Though we may have lost a few of the players and our coach, we have not lost our attitude, and we maintain many of the players who curate such a devotion. Currently we are looking for a coach whom will keep teaching us, inspiring a love of the game, pushing us toward success; if you give us the tools needed to win, oxy ruggers will fight as hard as we can for that win.

Roles & Responsibilities:

  1. Coaching – Men’s: Plan & Structure all rugby training sessions. Together with the Club President, schedule friendly fixtures in the fall season (Sept-Dec), together with a couple team building events and fundraisers. During the league season (Jan–April) implement and adjust game plans to suit season goals and player personnel. Organize and run the January rugby camp (3 to 4 days) which takes place a few days before the school semester begins. During playoffs (April/May) ensure fundraising goals have been met, organize and manage travel and accommodation logistics for the squad to compete in the various NSCRO 15s and 7s playoffs.
  2. Fundraising: Work with the student selected fundraising committee and ORAA (Oxy Rugby Alumni Asoc.) to plan out the season’s potential fundraising opportunities.
  3. Occidental Rugby Alumni Association (ORAA): Keep in close contact with ORAA during the year.
  4. Women’s Rugby: Ensure that the Men’s & Women’s squads have a couple events together during the year, and support the Women’s program.
  5. Media: Proactive media using newsletters, the Occidental e-blasts, Facebook and Twitter to inform the Occidental Rugby community throughout the year.
  6. NSCRO & Gold Coast: Keeping updated on the developments of the league structure and playoff scenarios.

Challenges:

  1. Player Recruitment: This will be vital with 11 seniors graduating this year. Working with the football program will be key to the future success of the rugby program.
  2. ORAA: A more cohesive plan for the year should be laid out before the season, with everyone involved given clear tasks during various parts of the season. These tasks need to be followed-up on, and managed.
  3. Training Field and Times: This past season was difficult to secure ideal training times, often only having the field from 9.30pm onwards, which tends to end very late around 11pm.
  4. NSCRO’s eligibility for larger teams to take part in the ‘Small College’ division has made it extremely difficult to advance in the playoff structures.
  5. Gold Coast: Most of the teams in the Southern California division would like to play some league fixtures in the fall season, which doesn’t suit Occidental with many players overseas and not having full access to facilities for home matches during that time period. Also it has been a challenge for Occidental to take in this D3 / Small College division, with other teams wanting us to move to D2.

Requirements:

  1. Must be a level II USA rugby certified coach
  2. Must pass a background check administered by the school.
